The Self Pleasure Narrative

Its time to change the double standard...

Men and women are equal right? After all, this is 2021!

I think we can all agree that we've definitely come a long way since 100 years ago, Cue my favourite Beyoncé song, who run the world?!

GIRLS!!!!!

Although we've come a long way regarding equality in society, there is still ALOT of work do. Aside from the prevalent issues such as the wage gap or the orgasm gap, let's shed some light on the masturbation gap.

If I'm being completely transparent here, I had never heard of the masturbation gap. At least not as a term or a phrase that is used to describe the issue at hand.

The issue being, men masturbate more often then women. Now this isn't because men are more sexual than women, or because women don't like masturbation. It comes down to a societal stigma, education and a clear double standard that exists.

In the 1960s, research into human sexuality finally revealed that masturbation is common, and in fact, harmless. Once this fact was established, it allowed for generations of men to openly admit to self pleasuring. Not only admit, but it provided the ability to openly discuss this type of sexual pleasure.

As a society we have created a self pleasure narrative.

A narrative that says "men will be men", a narrative that has normalized male sexuality, and a narrative that says "its normal for men to masturbate".

What is the problem with this type of narrative?

It doesn't include women, thus, creating a division (or a gap)

Let's ask ourselves what narrative has been created about women and self pleasure?

As a society, we have created a narrative that fears female sexuality. A narrative that shames women for being sexual, a narrative that says "its taboo for women to masturbate"

This screams double standard and is not an accurate depiction of reality. The reality is, women, men, or otherwise, are all sexual creatures. It is the biology of how we are created. The problem lies with society creating a shame around female self pleasure. Female self pleasure is natural and normal, and is something that should be encouraged.

Self pleasure fosters a better understanding of your body. It empowers pleasure and places ownership on the individual to be accountable for their own pleasure. Understanding that your pleasure is your responsibility, can have a huge impact on self esteem, as well as sexual health.

As a society, it is our obligation to change the self pleasure narrative. It is on us, to change the double standard. We need to close the masturbation gap. It is time to encourage a sex positive & pleasure positive society, where sexuality is no longer feared, but celebrated...one orgasm at a time.
